The Starry Night

About This Puzzle

• The most famous Van Gogh, and the painting widely hailed as his magnum opus: The Starry Night (1889), from my favourite of all the Masters.

It depicts the view from his sanatorium window at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence at night, though he painted it from memory during the day: a spiritual, dreamy glimpse of what he saw while in isolation. A perfectionist and his own harshest critic, Van Gogh produced his finest works in less than three years, with ever more impassioned brushstrokes and intense, symbolic colour.
